Overview

Moana / Marijuana Cake refers to a story about a woman whose mother asked ice cream and fast-food establishment Dairy Queen for a Moana themed birthday cake for her, but was instead delivered a Marijuana themed cake due to the Dairy Queen employee mishearing the order. While the customer took the error in stride, the story went viral and led Dairy Queen to fire the employee.

Background

On July 2nd, 2019, Facebook user Kensli Taylor Davis[1] posted an image of a marijuana-themed cake she had received for her birthday. The cake features a marijuana leaf and a My Little Pony character smoking a marijuana cigarette. She wrote:

I haven’t had a chance to tell y’all about our experience this weekend with my birthday cake. So my mama called and ordered me a cake telling them how much I loved Moana. (Because really I do) Well needless to say these people thought she said marijuana 😂😂😂 That ice cream cake was still good though 🤷🏻‍♀️

Developments

The post has gained over 15,000 likes and reactions as of July 15th, 2019. While most commenters laughed at the mix-up, Dairy Queen fired the cake decorator who made the cake, Cassandra Walker.[2] Walker told USA Today that she made the cake under her manager's instructions, who misheard the original order and told Walker it was okay. She stated to USA Today, "It’s not funny to me. This is back-to-school time. I have two little girls here. I have a car that needs fixing. It’s not funny to me." She was fired by one of the Dairy Queen's owners, Al Autry. In a statement to USA Today, Autry said:

"This was a simple misunderstanding from the beginning. Our cake decorator designed a cake based on what she thought she heard the customer order. When the customer picked it up and said it was not what she ordered, we immediately apologized for the error and offered to redesign it the way she originally intended. The customer said it was fine, paid for the cake and left."

On July 15th, the Daily Dot[3] covered the story, saying Walker was offered her job back, but declined.
