McGill Fight Club

Overview

McGill Fight Club refers to an unofficial, student-run "fight night" that allegedly took place at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, on November 9th, 2020. 2 days after the event a poster advertising it, which included the first names of those involved, as well as a map pointing out exactly where the event was to take place, started circulating on Twitter. Twitter users immediately started making jokes about the poster and fight night in general, particularly criticizing whoever made the poster for their lack of discretion surrounding an illegal event on school property and comparing it to the book and film Fight Club.

Background

On November 11th, 2020, Twitter user arkenthusiast^[1] tweeted, "the first rule of fight club is make a canvas poster with the names of everyone who’s going to be fighting so that admin knows who to expel." He then posted an image of a poster advertising a "Fight Night" at the university in response to a comment under his tweet (shown below). The poster advertises the location of the fight night (Forbes Field by upper rez) a map showing the exact location, the first names of those fighting, the promise of cash prizes, a betting pool, and basic first aid on-site.

Twitter users were quick to make jokes about the event, particularly about the fact that it was advertised via poster when it involved so many illegal activities (namely betting and fighting on school property). Some Twitter users pointed out how irresponsible a fight night is during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many Twitter users posted their reactions via memes^[2][3] (examples shown below).

On November 11th, 2020, the Students' Society of McGill University^[4] Twitter page posted a joke referring to the fight night (shown below).

On the same day, student-run newspaper The Mcgill Daily^[5] posted a parody of the Fight Night poster advertising a fictional museum heist (shown below).

On November 12th, the Montreal Gazette^[6] published an article about the event, showcasing some of the memes posted by Twitter users. In the article, there is a quote from a McGill spokesperson who claims security was aware of the event and arrived on the scene when it was meant to happen, however nobody could be found, meaning the fight night may have been called off. In contrast to this, multiple users on Twitter and the /r/McGill subreddit shared alleged video proof of the fight night, but the footage has not been confirmed as authentic.^[7] On the same data, MTL Blog published an article showcasing funny tweets about the fight night.^[8]

Maxime RVC Memes

The name "Maxime (RVC)" appears in three different scheduled fights on the fight night poster. Many began to suspect that he was one of the founding members of the fight club. Because of this, users on Twitter and Reddit began making ironic memes directly referencing Maxime (examples shown below).
