Overview

Lady Gaga and Madonna Feud refers to the public disagreements between American pop stars Madonna and Lady Gaga over Lady Gaga's 2011 song, "Born This Way."

Background

In 1989, Sire/ Warner Bros. Records released Madonna's Like A Prayer album which included the hit song "Express Yourself." The official music video was uploaded to YouTube on October 26, 2009 (shown below, left). On February 27th, Lady Gaga released "Born This Way" (shown below, right). The official music video has gained 242 million views on YouTube in eight years. Many critics pointed out the similarities between the two songs.

Developments

On January 13, 2012, Madonna was interviewed by ABC News and stated that Lady Gaga is "reductive" (shown below, left). The Interview uploaded to YouTubed gained over one million views and 7,800 likes in eight years. There were plenty of jabs back and forth between the two. [5] In December 2014, Lady Gaga performed a mashup of "Express Yourself" and "Born This Way" on Saturday Night Live (shown below, right).

On February 25th, 2015, Madonna stated in an issue of RollingStone[4] "The only time I ever criticized Lady Gaga was when I felt like she blatantly ripped off one of my songs."

2019 Oscars After Party

On February 25th, 2019, TIME[1] magazine posted an image of the two embracing at the 2019 Oscars after party to their Instagram. The image received 130,500 likes in a day (shown below).

That same day on Twitter @GagaMediaDotNet released a video of the two at the party (shown below).


Online Reaction

On February 25th, many Twitter users applauded their friendship and reacted to the TIME Instagram photos. Twitter user @deorodrigay[3] compared the picture to a "Madonna and Child" painting (shown below, left). The tweet garnered 2,504 retweets and 9,100 likes in a day. That same day, Twitter user @cinetosi[2] expressed that peace in the world had been obtained now that Gaga and Madonna are friends (shown below, right). The tweet accumulated 650 retweets and 3,600 likes in a day.
