JoJo Siwa's Haircut refers to children's YouTube star JoJo Siwa cutting off her iconic ponytail hairstyle and getting a short haircut. In April 2022, Siwa uploaded multiple Instagram Live videos and posts that became image macros in subsequent memes online. Many users related her haircut to a style typical of Karens or to being "butch" in reference to her sexuality that first became apparent in her Coming Out Announcement in early 2021.
Origin
On April 7th, 2022, JoJo Siwa posted a selfie on Instagram[1] showcasing her new haircut. She had cut off her iconic, high ponytail, instead opting for a shorter pixie cut. In less than 24 hours, the photo received roughly 866,300 likes and thousands of comments (shown below).
Spread
On April 7th, 2022, the photo spread to Twitter, screenshotted and reposted by Twitter[2] user lilygayce who captioned it, "pls lmk if we are about to witness the butchification of jojo siwa in real time," earning roughly 225,700 likes in less than a day (shown below, left). Also on the 7th, Twitter[3] user ladybturd captioned a different photo of JoJo Siwa's haircut, stating, "this is what listening to cool for the summer by demi lovato will do to you," earning roughly 234,500 likes in one day (shown below, right).
On April 7th, more Twitter users chimed in to the discussion, posting memes and reactions to the short haircut. For instance, Twitter[4] user rubyslippersue related JoJo's new look to someone who'd drive a One Direction Honda Civic, earning roughly 5,700 likes in one day (shown below). Additionally, Instagram[5] meme page joan.of.arca reposted the image on April 8th and earned roughly 12,000 likes in three hours.
Siwa's haircut was also praised by meme creators and fans online. Many people thought the new look for Siwa was great, like Twitter[6] user pearlinin who reposted an Instagram Story from Siwa that showed her haircut in more detail, captioning it, "obsessed with jojo siwa's new hair omg," and earning roughly 320,100 views and 3,600 likes (shown below).
