Overview

Jim Carrey and Alessandra Mussolini Twitter Feud refers to an argument between actor Jim Carrey and Alessandra Mussolini, granddaughter of Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, over a piece of art Carrey posted to Twitter showing Benito Mussolini and his mistress Claretta being hung by their ankles after Mussolini was overthrown.

Background

On March 30th, 2019, Jim Carrey[1] posted art of Benito Mussolini and his mistress Claretta being hung by their ankles after Mussolini was overthrown (shown below, left). In response, Alessandra Mussolini, Benito's granddaughter, replied "You are a bastard" (shown below, right).

Developments

Mussolini continued arguing with commenters on Twitter who were reminding her of her grandfather's actions. She got into a back-and-forth with user @evanoconnell[2] who said she was confusing Carrey with her "murderous grandfather" (shown below, left). She threatened user @notcawri[3] saying she had "terrible information" about their "bad family" (shown below, right).

The event spawned a wave of social media reaction, mostly from bewildered users who found the concept of Carrey feuding with Mussolini's granddaughter ridiculous. User @thenatbird[4] tweeted their exhaustion at April Fools considering both this and Elon Musk's Harambe Rap were both real events and not pranks, gaining over 23,000 retweets and 70,000 likes (shown below, left). User @jbillinson tweeted a comparison between Twitter ten years ago to Twitter today, gaining over 1,900 retweets and 10,000 likes (shown below, right). The event was covered by numerous websites, including Daily Mail,[4] NBC,[5] and The Cut.[6]
