Background

On July 24, 2019, Jawsh 685 released the song "Laxed [Siren Beat]" on YouTube. The post received more than 9.3 million views in less than one year (shown below).

The following year, Jason Derulo posted a clip of his song "Savage Love" on TikTok. The song uses the same beat from "Laxed" but does not credit the original artist. Within two weeks, the video received more than 7 millions views, 1 million reactions and 20,000 comments (shown below).

Developments

Online Reaction

Following the post, TikTokers began tagging the @jawsh_685 in the comments, alerting the original singer to the song. TikToker @t_tuisaula wrote, "@jasonderulo you need to credit the original owner of the beat but I’ll do it for you. ALL CREDIT GOES TO @jawsh_685" (shown below, left).[1]

After the song post, Derulo tagged the original artist and commented "Recognize this sound?" (shown below, right).

On May 15th, Twitter user @ExtendoBans tweeted,[3] "Jason Derulo posted this pretending he created a new song then he pretended it was a remix and tried to credit Jawsh but he never paid for the beat…he 30 years old." The tweet received more than 1,800 likes and 300 retweets in less than one week (shown below).

Speaking to Variety,[2] an anonymous source said that Derulo went "rogue." They said:

Jason wanted the beat for a record -- he wanted the song to be a Jason Derulo song with Jawsh as a producer. But Jawsh should make decisions of what he wants to do with it, not be bullied by a bigger artist into putting it out.

Jawsh 685 Statement

Jawsh 685, whose real name is Joshua Stylah, said in a statement:
