Overview

ICE Employee Dox refers to the public posting of the LinkedIn profiles of agents of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement department of the government overseeing the enforcement of United States immigration laws. The release came after the department had been under intense criticism for its role in the Family Separation at the U.S.-Mexico Border controversy in which migrant children were separated from their parents trying to cross the United States/Mexico border.

Background

On June 19th, 2018, Sam Lavigne posted the LinkedIn profiles of everyone on the site who worked for ICE on Medium.[1] He also posted the list on Github.[2] He wrote in the Medium post, "As ICE continues to ramp up its inhumane surveillance and detention efforts, I believe it’s important to document what’s happening, and by whom, in any way we can."

Developments

Medium and Github quickly deleted the posts, saying it violated their community guidelines against doxxing.[3] Twitter took to suspending accounts that spread the information. However, the dataset is still readily available in archived posts[4] and the information is publicly available on LinkedIn.[5] Lavigne told The Verge[8] that he understood the decision, he thought "that the information is already out there, and if people want to embark on individual campaigns of harassment, then they’re going to be doing that no matter what.”

The post was was widely covered by news outlets The Daily Caller[6] wrote about the post, condemning it and Antifa Twitter accounts spreading it. Fox News[7] called Lavigne a "so-called" adjunct professor at New York University. It was also covered by Buzzfeed[9] and Select All.[10]

Online reaction was split down political lines. A thread on /pol/ mocked the action, with some using anti-semitic slurs against Lavigne.[11] Some users on Twitter and left-leaning subreddits praised the move. @antifa_ne[12] called Lavigne an "enterprising hero" (and was quoted in The Daily Caller) and it was spread on subreddits including /r/ChapoTrapHouse, where it gained over 147 points.[13]
