Overview

Goku In Fortnite refers to the mid-August 2022 release of Chapter 3: Season 3 of Fortnite, wherein, characters from Dragon Ball like Goku, Vegeta and Bulma became playable skins alongside others previously added like Darth Vader, Naruto Uzumaki and Rick Sanchez. Memes and discussion about Goku's addition to Fortnite became prevalent on Twitter, TikTok and Reddit.

Background

In November 2021 when Naruto was added to Fortnite, speculative discussion and memes surfaced on Twitter[1][2] about wanting Goku to also be added to the game. These memes became reality on July 18th, 2022, when information was leaked by Twitter[3] user MidaRado that highlighted code regarding the event. Later on July 18th, 2022, verified Fortnite news Twitter[4] account ShiinaBR reiterated MidaRado's information in a tweet that received roughly 13,500 likes in one month (shown below).

The collab between Dragon Ball and Fortnite was set to release on August 16th, 2022 and include Goku, Vegeta, Beerus and Bulma with every skin able to transform into "Super Saiyan" form.[5] Also, the Kame House from Dragon Ball was set to be included in the update.[6] The entire collab was to last seven weeks.

On August 16th, 2022, the YouTube channel of Fortnite released the official Dragon Ball gameplay trailer, earning roughly 1.1 million views in one day (shown below). Thereafter, the collab had begun.

Online Reactions

In July 2022, when the Dragon Ball x Fortnite collab was first leaked, memetic reactions surfaced online. For instance, on July 18th, 2022, Twitter[7] user IwasDracula tweeted, "When Goku and Naruto meet each other in fortnite," earning roughly 29,300 likes in one month (shown below, left). Leading up to the release in mid-August 2022, the memes became more abundant. For instance, on August 13th, 2022, Twitter[8] user itsqueazy captioned the Get Out Challenge image with, "Dragon ball fans 'no one can beat Goku' when Travis Scott and Spider-Man pull up with a stinger SMG," earning roughly 35,600 likes in five days (shown below, right).

On the day of the collab's release, more reactions surfaced across social media. For instance, on August 16th, 2022, Redditor tomthedum posted a screenshot to /r/gaming[9] that showed Naruto, Rick Sanchez, Darth Vader and Goku in Fortnite (shown below), captioning it, "how is this a real game." The post received roughly 109,000 upvotes in two days.

Also, multiple TikTokers uploaded content about the collab in mid-August 2022. For instance, on August 16th, 2022, TikToker[10] stardestroyer85 posted a video of Goku hitting the Griddy after getting a kill. The video received roughly 874,200 plays and 145,900 likes in two days (shown below, left). On August 17th, 2022, TikToker[11] solidlarson posted a video with a caption reading, "You are among the first to see Goku and Morty Fuse and then get Schwifty," earning roughly 624,700 plays and 115,600 likes in one day (shown below, right).
