GENESIS 6 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Seeding Controversy refers to the controversial seeding, the preliminary ranking of players in a tournament bracket, for the 2019 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate major tournament "GENESIS 6" in case of the bias towards the European SSBU scene by having European players being overall seeded lower than Japanese players.

Background

On January 25th, 2019, tournament staff of GENESIS 6 unveiled the seeding for the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate portion of the tournament.[1] The next day, top Super Smash Bros. Melee player and prominent SSBU streamer William "Leffen" Hjelte called out the seeders of the tournament for their bias against European players, comparing the results of top French player "Gluttony" versus top Japanese player "zackray," both players dominating their regions' tournaments, yet the former was ranked 35th while the latter 4th. After addressing his complaints to the seeding staff of the tournament, one of the staff members presented the hypothetical that if they defeated 500 penguins in Antarctica, should they be top seeded? The question implied that Europe's region holds less skill than that of Japan (shown below).

Leffen's Antarctica Scene Tweet

On January 26th, 2019, Leffen made a tweet sarcastically stating that he competed amongst the highly skilled penguins within the scene, stating that "You mess with the waddle, you mess with all of us."[2] The tweet garnered over 15,000 likes and over 2,000 retweets as of February 1st, 2019. Leffen's call out would be covered by Dot eSports.[4]

Soon after Leffen's tweet, the Smash Twitter community posted multiple jokes about penguin Smash players. Popular examples including a tweet from Nintendo UK VS wishing the European players good luck at the tournament, with a picture of four King Dedede's on a Battlefield version of the Ice Climber's stage Summit.[3] Twitter user @MikeHazeGaming made a joke referencing Salem's Years of Research tweet, gaining over 290 retweets and 2,400 likes (shown below, right).

The European players at GENESIS 6 would often be referred to as "penguins" by the commentators at the event in reference to Leffen's tweet.
