Overview
Elon Musk's Alleged Affair With Google Co-founder Sergey Brin's Wife refers to a rumor reported by the Wall Street Journal in July 2022 that the divorce between Google co-founder Sergey Brin and his wife Nicole Shanahan was caused by a brief affair Shanahan had with Elon Musk sometime around late 2021. The allegation was denied by Musk, though the ensuing controversy led to much discussion online, as well as memes and jokes.
Background
On July 24th, 2022, the Wall Street Journal[1] reported that the cause of the divorce between Google co-founder Sergey Brin and Nicole Shanahan was allegedly due to Shanahan's brief affair with Musk. The affair is said to have occurred at the Art Basel gallery in Miami in December 2021 when Brin and Shanahan were married but separated. The pair filed for divorce in January 2022. Musk is purportedly said to have begged Brin on his knees for forgiveness. The report also cited unnamed sources close to the matter.
On July 25th at 1 a.m. EST, the @WSJ Twitter account then tweeted out the story (shown below), receiving over 150 likes, 30 retweets and 25 quote retweets in 15 hours as the article began generating viral discussions.
Developments
Elon Musk's Response
The same day of the article's release on July 24th, 2022, Musk quickly and publically denied the report on Twitter, noting that neither himself, Shanahan nor Brin were quoted in the interview.[2] He also said he had seen Shanahan twice in the last three years at crowded events.[3] Neither Shanahan nor Brin have commented on the rumor as of July 25th, 2022.
BanksyMaximo's Offer / "Haven't Even Had Sex in Ages" Tweet
In further denial of the rumor, Musk also tweeted[4] the message "Haven't even had sex in ages (sigh)" on July 24th, 2022 (shown below, top). In response, several women in Musk's replies volunteered to have sex with him, as well as Twitter user @BanksyMaximo,[5] an apparent heterosexual, married man (shown below, bottom).
The response and the ensuing thread in which @BanksyMaximo elaborated on his willingness to "blow" Musk for a "greater cause" spread on Twitter. For example, Twitter user @trash_ebooks[6] posted the entire thread that same day, gaining over 1,500 retweets and 21,000 likes in six hours (shown below).
