Dannypocalypse

Overview

Dannypocalypse is an annual event recognized every April 3rd, primarily on Tumblr, in celebration of Danny Phantom's premiere date. Dannypocalypse was started by Tumblr user narwhalsarefallingfirst in 2017. Those who celebrate are encouraged to change their profile pictures to a specific image of Danny staring forward and to make as many memes and pieces of fan art about Danny Phantom as possible, with many using the image of Danny staring.

History

Dannypocalypse was first celebrated on Tumblr on April 3rd, 2017. It was created by Tumblr user narwhalsarefalling, who explained its origins in a 2018 post to their alternate Tumblr^[1] page dannypocalypse, writing:

so last year (2017), we were running out of ideas to celebrate the anniversary of danny phantom. we used to have a thing were we would write the goriest, angestist, bloodiest stories on the 1st, and then maybe to something wholesome for the 3rd like family bonding or danny hanging out with his ghost friends, but then my signifigant other @punkhalfghosts showed me the cursed image.

and in the GLORIOUS slack chat, and me on a roll from planning the 2017 rarepair week and some other events, we all agreed to change our icons to that picture, on this day, and make as many memes as possible. @ectopusses made several of the starting memes, we changed our icons on the 2nd, and the memes commenced.

we even got noticed by butch hartman himself, who didnt even @ me which is like the second worst thing that happened to me with him (the first being me getting blocked on snapchat)

famous phandom icons including @cordria, @haikujitsu and other immovable gods changed their icons. they reblogged memes. SoaD updated on the same day but the effect was lost on everyone else because of the memes

The "cursed image" of Danny is a still frame from an episode of the show, although the original post that inspired its use by Tumblr user the-scholarly-livingdead has been deleted (image shown below).

Dannypocalypse 2018-2023

Dannypocalypse has been celebrated on Tumblr every year since 2017, always denoted by an increased presence of Danny Phantom memes both general and using the "cursed" Danny Phantom head. In the days leading up to Dannypocalypse, memes are often posted warning of the impending date (example by Tumblr user dannypocalypse^[4] shown below).

Dannypocalypse 2024

April 3rd, 2024, marked the 20th anniversary of Danny Phantom's premiere, resulting in significant participation in the celebrations on Tumblr that year, leading the hashtag to the number one trending spot that day. Some of the top memes posted that day include posts by Tumblr^[2][3] users floq and harbingerofsoup, the former a reference to the Blank Room Soup video, garnering over 4,900 and 2,900 notes, respectively, in under a day (shown below, left and right).

Dannypocalypse is almost exclusively celebrated on Tumblr, although has a small presence on X / Twitter and Reddit every year among Danny Phantom fans. Participants in the event are encouraged to use the hashtag "#dannypocalypse" on Tumblr when posting memes related to the day.
