Background

On October 31st, 2023, X[1] user @numetal_moment, a gimmick account with over 140,000 followers that posts nu metal-related content, posted, "This account may enter a period of inactivity as I am being indicted for securities fraud at 4PM tomorrow. Stay tuned for further updates," garnering over 22,000 likes and 3,200 reposts in two days (shown below).

Some of the most viral responses make light of the situation, with some unsure whether or not to believe the user. That day, X[2] user @olobersaiks responded, "This is so nu metal in every aspect," to which @numetal_moment responded, "It really isn't I'm facing 25 years," garnering over 8,700 likes in two days (shown below, left).

On the same day, X[3] user @davidgross_man commented a link to an article on Justice.gov[4] titled, "Four Men Indicted for Defrauding Global Financial Services Company Based in Menlo Park, California of Over Two Million Dollars," implying @numetal_moment is one of the four men. @numetal_moment responded to the X[5] post that day, writing, "I've been advised not to speak on the details of the case at this time thank you" (shown below, right).

The article details how four men were charged with "conspiracy to commit securities fraud and money laundering conspiracy in connection with a scheme to steal millions of dollars from a global financial services company based in Menlo Park, California." It is unconfirmed if this article is related to the case.

On November 1st, 2023, @numetal_moment made a post from his personal X[6] account, @HolidayKirk, about the indictment, writing, "I’d like to take a minute to address some rumors swirling about my impending indictment for securities fraud," garnering over 500 likes in a day. That day just after 4 p.m. EST, @numetal_moment posted a photograph to X[7] of the front of the Los Angeles Superior Court, writing, "It’s been the honor of a lifetime administrating this account. Thank you for everything. Goodbye," garnering over 61,000 likes in a day (shown below).

Holiday Kirk Admits Hoax

On November 2nd, 2023, @HolidayKirk, @numetal_moment's personal account, made a post to X[13] admitting they were not indicted for securities fraud, writing:

"For anyone checking in I wanna be crystal clear about htis cuz I am not in the business of lying: I'm good. The whole thing was a bit. It was a blast but it's time to get back to the task at hand which is platforming nu-metal bands, young and old, that deserve the attention.

Online Reactions

On November 1st, 2023, several X gimmick accounts used the post text of @numetal_moment's post announcing his indictment as a copypasta. For example, on that day, the X[8][9][10] accounts @INVESTMENTSHULK, @JermSansContext and @GDReferences copy-pasted the text, garnering over 1,300, 5,500 and 3,000 likes, respectively, in a day (shown below).

Later that day, X[11] user @C_hoffmanni quote-reposted @numetal_moment's post outside the courthouse, writing, "I turn a private account into a gimmick account called Crazy Ass Moments in American Politics because I’m bored while waiting for my girlfriend’s plane to land and that leads to an imitator of my brand getting indicted for securities fraud," garnering over 17,000 likes in a day. The X[12] gimmick account @EverythingOOC posted, "Bro facing 25 years in prison what a CRAZY ASS ENDING," garnering over 3,200 likes in a day.
