Overview

Cory Carnley Undocumented Immigrant Classmate Controversy refers to a post on the subreddit /r/The_Donald in which he brags about reporting a classmate, who was an undocumented immigrant, to United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Since the posting, Carnley has been expelled from school.

Background

On January 29th, 2018, Redditor[1] ChipperLockPicker posted a selfie with a pipe in his mouth, a Make America Great Again Hat on and holding up the OK symbol in front of a portrait of Donald Trump. The thread was titled "MFW I report an illegal who goes to my school to ICE." The post (shown below) received more than 2,800 points (74% upvoted) and 390 comments.

Developments

That day, an anonymous user in the 4chan /pol message board posted a screenshot from Reddit of people threatening ChipperLockPicker. The post was titled "Reddit goes after teen who got someone deported" and received more than 310 responses before archiving.

That day, Facebook [5] KornDMT posted the original Reddit post with the caption "anyone figure out who he is yet." The post received more than 375 reactions and 150 shares in two days.

Additionally, that day, the website Babe.net[3] published an article entitled "This terrible high schooler bragged about reporting his undocumented classmate so they could be deported." In the article, they published the users name, Cory Carnley, as well as previous posts under the handle ChipperLockPicker in which the poster uses racist and anti-semitic language (examples below). In an update for the article, they confirmed that Carnely had deleted the Reddit account.

The following day, Babe[4] confirmed that Carnley had been expelled from school. David Shelnutt, Gainesville High Principal told Babe, "The student who made the postings is no longer attending GHS." He continued:

"I could not disagree more with the ideas in these posts. They certainly do not represent our school's culture. GHS is a wonderfully diverse school where students come together and do amazing things. One student does not speak for 1,800 classmates. While this is an extremely unfortunate situation, I hope it will also serve as a learning opportunity for our students."

That day, Twitter [6] user @VenusAsABun posted a screenshot of the original Reddit post and the Babe.net article with the caption "Remember: It only takes 36 hours ruin a racist’s life." The post (shown below) received more than 4,700 retweets and 14,000 likes in 24 hours.
