Overview

Brooklyn Chipman Latina Makeup Controversy refers to a controversy involving American Brooklyn Chipman for allegedly changing her name to Una Gutierrez and cosplaying as a Latina woman after a TikTok user leaked some pictures of Chipman without makeup in late February 2024. Before the exposure, Brooklyn's "Latina Makeup" images were used as reference for several content creators on the internet, which sparked a debate on the subject as well as numerous jokes and memes about it.

Background

Rumors about Brooklyn Chipman, also known as Una Gutierrez, pretending to be Latina started on TikTok[1] around February 18th, 2024, as user @user281727383939393 posted one of the earliest videos comparing Chipman's pictures in which she appears wearing "Latina makeup" and other pictures of her with blonde hair and makeup-less. The video (shown below, left) amassed more than 24,000 plays and 2,200 likes in a week.

On February 23rd, 2024, the TikTok[2] account @user8383727228283, which was recently created, shared a montage of pictures featuring Brooklyn Chipman, an American known for her "Latina makeup" pictures, accusing the influencer of being a white woman "pretending to be Latina the whole time." At the end of the video (shown below, right), the user added three pictures of Chipman without her "Latina makeup," which amassed more than 2.5 million plays and 424,000 likes in a week.

Developments

Over the following days, more images of Brooklyn Chipman without the "Latina makeup" began to spread on social media, as people tried to find out if she was Latina. X[3] user @vamphndrxx posted a video showing alleged "proof" that Chipman lied about being Latina (shown below). The video shows old pictures of her, as well as her parents who are both from Abilene, Texas. The post garnered over 424,000 views and 3,700 likes in a week.

Clint Chipman's Response

On February 28th, 2024, Brooklyn Chipman's father, Clint Chipman, joined TikTok[4] to share a video asking people to stop harassing his daughter, saying Brooklyn had a "Latino style for a few years" and that his daughter chose the Hispanic name "Una Gutierrez" because her grandmother was "looking her up so much," as Clint explains. The video (shown below) amassed more than 782,000 plays and 31,000 likes in three days.

Online Reactions

Online, Chipman's "Latina makeup" pictures resurfaced on TikTok, as people commented on the controversy. For example, on February 27th, 2024, TikTok[5] user @janeturbina8 tried to recreate the "Latina makeup" inspired by Brooklyn's viral image while commenting on the girl's incident (shown below, left). The video amassed over 3 million plays and 194,000 likes in five days. On February 29th, 2024, TikTok[6] user @rinathechina posted a similar video commenting on Chipman's story while recreating her makeup (shown below, right), which garnered more than 1.6 million plays and 184,000 likes in three days.
