Overview

#BoycottWalmart is a hashtag campaign launched by conservatives calling for a boycott of Walmart retail stores in protest of their sale of clothing printed with "Impeach 45," a slogan calling for the impeachment of the 45th President of the United States Donald Trump.

Background

On July 2nd, 2018, Twitter user @RyanAFournier[1] posted a tweet directed to @Walmart asking why they were selling "Impeach 45" clothing (shown below). Within 24 hours, the tweet gained over 10,400 likes and 8,000 retweets.

The tweet linked a page of the Walmart website, displaying a sale page for a baby clothing item titled "Impeach 45 45th President Donald Trump Soft Baby One Piece" (shown below). That page has since been removed.

Developments

Online Reaction

That day, Trump supporters began criticizing Walmart for selling the clothing, calling for a boycott with the trending hashtag #BoycottWalmart (shown below).

The following day, Redditor Jason4Hees1243 submitted a post asking "Why is #BoycottWalmart trending on Twitter?" to /r/OutOfTheLoop.[3] That day, The Daily Dot[4] published an article titled "Conservatives are threatening to boycott Walmart over ‘Impeach 45’ clothes." Meanwhile, the Breaking News Headlines YouTube channel uploaded a video about the backlash (shown below).
