Related Explainer: Why Are People Blocking Celebrities? The 'BlockOut 2024' And 'Celebrity Block List' TikTok Trend Explained

The Blocking Celebrities Trend, also known as Blockout 2024, Celebrity Block List 2024, Celebrity Block Party or BlockTok, refers to a trend started in the wake of the 2024 Met Gala in which TikTokers and other internet users made a list of celebrities to block on social media to protest their wealth by attempting to stop their ad revenue. High-level influencers were also included in the block list. The campaign centered on blocking celebrities to support Palestine amid the 2024 Israel-Hamas conflict, targeting celebrities who didn't speak up to condemn the IDF. The hashtag "#BlockOut2024" became synonymous with the trend akin to the TikToker who started the trend named @blockout2024. References to the Marie Antoinette quote Let Them Eat Cake also became synonymous with the trend, notably including TikTok influencer Haleyybaylee's 'Let Them Eat Cake' controversy.

On May 8th, 2024, TikToker[1] @blockout2024 posted a stitch with footage from the 2024 Met Gala and a news broadcast about the war in Gaza. The TikToker urged people to block celebrities so they couldn't make ad revenue. He gave an example, saying that Kim Kardashian supposedly hadn't made money from him since December 2023 when he blocked her on social media. Over two days, the TikTok gained roughly 2.1 million plays and 334,300 likes (shown below).

TikToker[2][3] @blockout2024 posted multiple videos about blocking celebrities on May 8th, such as one in which he explained why blocking celebrities was important. He claimed that "We have full control over celebrities' money and lives." He further stated, "When we hate on them, they make money. When we praise them, they make money. But when we block their social media accounts and completely forget their names, they lose it all." Over two days, his TikTok received roughly 1.3 million plays and 297,300 likes (shown below).
