Bhad Bhabie's Blackfishing Controversy refers to an Instagram post in which Danielle Bregoli or Bhad Bhabie appears to be black. The post, which circulated Twitter in April 2020, was criticized for blackfishing, or trying to appear black on social media.

On April 6th, 2020, Bhad Bhabie posted a video of herself to Instagram in which her skin tone appears much darker than usual. The post gained over 813,900 likes in a day.

Developments

On April 6th, 2020, Twitter user @MiKah_Gee^[1] posted a screenshot of the Instagram post and captioned it, "How TF Bhad Bhabie go from a white teenager to a grown black woman?" (shown below, left). The tweet garnered over 1,200 likes in a day. That same day, Twitter user @UrFavoriteAries^[2] tweeted, "A vast majority of the people that are mad at bhad bhabie are the same ones that encouraged her behavior & found it funny when she was acting like a stereotypical BW & gave her the platform she has now lol y’all are responsible for that mess" (shown below, right). The tweet accumulated over 4,700 likes and 860 retweets in a day.

On April 6th, @HW4S3ONG^[3] posted a photo of Bhad Bhabie and Lil Mama with the caption, "y'all let bhad bhabie get famous by ripping off black culture and now she look like lil mama" (shown below). The tweet received over 1,600 likes and 280 retweets in day. The Daily Dot^[4] and Popbuzz^[5] published articles on the controversy.
