BeansHype 89-Year-Old Husband Controversy

Overview

The BeansHype 89-Year-Old Husband Controversy refers to the marriage of 19-year-old senior living center aide Oliva Stone and 89-year-old widower Lee Hopkins in October 2020. The story went viral after a series of social media posts by Stone, in which she expressed a desire to marry Hopkins for his money, spread on Twitter. After the story went viral, Stone closed her Twitter account @BeansHype, where she went under the name "mrs vagina jones."

Background

On October 12th, 2020, Twitter^[1] user @JackWillamRtF posted the first tweet in a thread about the relationship between Stone aka @BeansHype and Lee Hopkins. They write, "okay this is a thread to try to give just the facts of what is going on with the now deactivated account BeansHype, the 19-year-old who married her 89-year-old boo this weekend in Arkansas. I have collected as many screenshots as I can and will present them in chronological order." The tweet received more than 20,000 likes and 2,000 retweets (shown below).

In the thread, @JackWilliamRtF details their relationship. Hopkins, an 89-year-old man, lost his wife in a car accident in 2017.^[2] Stone began tweeting about a 90-year-old man in July 2020. In a July 2nd tweet, she writes, "Why am I considering this? He is 90-years-old." A friend responded, "Get the bag, sis" (shown below, left). @JackWilliamRtF continues, July 23, the following screenshots from the DM group, the reply bis, where BH discusses the possibility of a sexual relationship and reveals 'if we get married i would be the sole person who gets his inheritance'" (shown below, center).

@JackWilliamRtF's thread documents August 12th as the "latest day their sexual relationship could have begun." That day, Stone writes, "No man ever has an excuse to spend less than two hours downstairs again, if your great-grandpa can do it then you can too" (shown below, right).

Throughout the next two months, according to the screenshots in @JackWilliamRtF's thread, ^[3]Stone continues to joke about and comment on Hopkins' worsening health (examples below).

On October 11th, 2020, @BeansHype tweeted a photograph of herself and Hopkins on their wedding day. The following day, she deleted her Twitter account.

Online Reaction

The conversation regarding the marriage spread throughout the internet. On October 12th, 2020, in the /pol/ ^[4] imageboard, an anonymous 4chan user posted the "we are married" tweet and commented, "YOUNG WOMAN MARRIES GRANDFATHER. WHY DID SHE DO THIS? DOES ANYONE KNOW? WHAT ARE THE POLITICAL ISSUES BEHIND THIS AND HER REASONING? Yet, young males complain they can't find a partner. Old War vet finds a young blood fertile womb to conquer" (shown below, left).

Twitter user @KarlAlone5 tweeted,^[5] "I’m sorry for not believe that a 19-year-old e-girl with the user name 'Ms Vagina Jones' is in love with her super-wealthy 89 year old husband with dementia." The tweet received more than 2,300 likes and 200 retweets in less than two days (shown below, right).

Others on Twitter shared various screenshots of @BeansHype's tweeted. On October 13th, Twitter^[6] user @NewSovietPoster tweeted, "Hold up. The 19-year old’s dementia addled husband was in Laos during Vietnam?" The tweet received more than 2,000 likes and 150 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below). Laos was the site of a so-called "secret war" during Vietnam.^[7] As a result of @BeansHype's tweet, some accused Hopkins of war crimes.
