About
Amy Roiland (AFashionNerd) Voice Note Controversy refers to backlash against fashion blogger, influencer and TikToker Amy Roiland after an aggressive voice note allegedly left by her to a studio in which she complains that they won't let her use the space for free for mother-daughter photographs was leaked online by the studio's owner. The voice note inspired criticism toward Roiland not only for the way she handled the situation but for her content in general, much of which focuses on her young daughter. Following the controversy in November 2022, AFashionNerd deleted her and her daughter's TikTok accounts. Amy Roiland is notably the sister of Rick and Morty creator Justin Roiland.
Origin
On November 13th, 2022, TikToker[1] @smacmccreanor posted a video where she does an interpretive dance under the caption, "This is a real voice note an influencer left on my studio business IG when I said No to her using our space for free." The voice note, which plays as she dances, features a woman, allegedly Amy Roiland, complaining that @smacmccreanor won't let her use her photography studio space for free for photos with her daughter, Ryder Bird. She complains that usually she charges "a lot" for postings, boasts that she gets about 12 million views on TikTok and says, "Are you 90 years old? Do you not know how influencers work?" She then says she wanted to film a "viral video" with her daughter there to give the studio free exposure, suggesting that her content will bring more people to @smacmcrcreanor's studio. The video gained over 2.7 million views in a day.
The TikToker[2] posted another video that day sharing further details, including further aggressive emails, text messages and DMs left to her by the same influencer, allegedly Roiland. The first text shows the influencer asking for a collab and boasting her social media stats, to which the studio owner responds by saying they only take paying clients. Roiland responds by boasting about her followers again, resulting in the studio owner reiterating that they aren't looking to work with influencers for free and adding that artists should support each other. She ends the text, "Knowing that you have continuously asked multiple studios for free time is unfortunately disappointing." She then shares numerous other messages allegedly from Roiland complaining further that she won't let her use the studio for free. The video (shown below) gained over 625,000 views in a day.
Spread
As the videos by @smacmccreanor went viral in mid-November 2022, TikTokers began speculating that the influencer she was talking about was Amy Roiland (who goes by @AFashionNerd on TikTok) based on her voice and the fact that much of her content consists of photos of her and her daughter, whose age also matches up with the age mentioned in the messages to @smacmccreanor.
TikTokers[3] then began posting TikToks attempting to expose Roiland as the influencer in the videos on November 13th, 2022, the day the videos were initially posted (example shown below, left). That same day, TikToker[4] @panamakinnell posted a video revealing a DM sent to her out of the blue by Amy telling her she's the sister of Justin Roiland (shown below, right). In the video, the poster calls Amy "off" and suggests people don't work with her. Users also began flooding the comments of Roiland's most recent videos calling her out for the alleged voice note.
As people continued to attempt to expose and criticize Roiland, she deleted her TikTok account (AFashionNerd) and her daughter's TikTok account (ryder.bird). On November 13th, 2022, Twitter[5] user @luvu2golka posted, "fashion influencer Amy Roiland has deleted her tiktok following the release of a voice note she sent to a studio that wouldn’t let her shoot there for free," garnering over 2,600 likes in a day. That same day, TikToker[6] @annareportsnews then posted a video explaining the drama, garnering over 447,000 views in a day (shown below).
