Overview

311 Day is an annual unofficial holiday taking place on March 11th in which fans of the American rock band 311 celebrate the band via tributes on social media. The band will semi-annually play an extended concert for fans on the day. The day was chosen by the band as March 11th reads as "3/11" on American calendars.

Background

On March 11th, 2000, 311 started "311 Day," playing a setlist of 47 songs.[1] In 2004, the setlist increased to 68 songs and a concert DVD of the performance was released later that year. Their 2006 performance was broadcast on HDTV later that year (examples shown below). The performances continue to this day, many of which have been streamed live or released later that year. In 2012, the performance was split into two days for the first time, as the band's setlist over the two days grew to 79 songs.[4]

Developments

In 2006, the first entries for "311 Day" were submitted to Urban Dictionary (shown below).[2]

Every March 11th since 2000, 311 fans have posted songs and artwork in tribute of the band. These often include tributes to the band's hits, including "Come Original," "Amber," and "Beautiful Disaster." For example, on 311 day 2019, music critic Craig Jenkins posted "Come Original" to his Twitter account (shown below, left). Instagram user bruzzese3 posted an image macro for the band on 311 day 2018 that gained over 110 likes.[3]

The day has also inspired tributes on Reddit, particularly on the band's subreddit, /r/311. There, users have posted covers[5] and jokes[6] related to the band (examples shown below).
