2024 Fur Affinity Hack

Overview

The 2024 Fur Affinity Hack refers to a domain hijacking attempt on the furry art website Fur Affinity by hackers in late August 2024. The hack took place on August 20th of that year, with the hacker first taking control of the Fur Affinity domain name and subsequently taking over the site's X / Twitter handle and the handle of the site's late founder Dragoneer. At one point, the Fur Affinity hacker attempted to redirect visitors to the site Kiwi Farms, with Kiwi Farms admins then distancing themselves from the hack, calling it a joke at both of their expense. The hacker also attempted to shill cryptocurrency using Fur Affinity's Twitter / X account and posted a screenshot of their crypto wallet showing a $300,000 loss. This post was soon deleted, with furries joking about the hacker losing money on a failed hacking attempt soon after.

Background

On August 20th, 2024, Fur Affinity administrators posted about the site experiencing a domain hacking attempt, warning users that they could be redirected to a different site that tries to extract their personal information. X^[1] user @Zilepo_Opeliz reposted the news early on August 20th, gathering over 7,000 likes in a day (seen below).

Developments

The hacker subsequently went on to hijack Fur Affinity's official Twitter / X account, as well as late Fur Affinity founder Dragoneer's account later on August 20th, 2024. The hacker made a series of inflammatory posts about furries using Fur Affinity's Twitter account and redirected the Fur Affinity landing page to a Fox News article (seen below).

At one point, the hacker attempted to shill cryptocurrency using the official Fur Affinity X handle and accidentally posted a screenshot showing that they suffered a $300,000 loss in their crypto wallet that day. The post was subsequently deleted by the hacker (seen below).

A few hours later on August 20th, the Fur Affinity hacker changed their Twitter handle to @ilovekiwi4lunch, leading to a furry X user (WindowsKernel of Discord) registering @furaffinity for safekeeping (shown below).

The hacker then began to redirect people trying to access Fur Affinity to Kiwi Farms, leading to Kiwi Farms putting up a notice distancing themselves from the hack and stating that they had no affiliation with them (shown below).

By August 21st, 2024, Fur Affinity admins locked down their Discord server, which nearly doubled in size in a day, and continued to post updates regarding the site (seen below).

Various furries and X users responded to the Fur Affinity hack as word of it spread, largely to mock the hacker for their perceived incompetence. An August 21st, 2024, post by X^[3] user @TimesNewHomo read, "furaffinity getting hacked by a guy who says 'yiff in hell furfags' feels kinda nostalgic," gathering over 1,400 likes in a day (seen below).

Also on August 21st, X^[4] user @nessfoxx joked about the Fur Affinity hacker losing $300,000, gathering over 19,000 likes in a day (seen below).
