Overview

2022 Discontinuation Of The Choco Taco, also known as Choco Taco Discontinued, refers to an event and ensuing controversy in which the Klondike company, who makes the chocolate-ice cream dessert, announced in July 2022 that the classic frozen treat would no longer be in production. News of the product being discontinued was widely covered by the media after the announcement, as well as viral discussions, memes and other posts referencing it appearing online shortly after.

Background

On July 25th, 2022, it was revealed that a Klondike representative had confirmed that due to an increase in production on other Klondike brand products, the Choco Taco was being discontinued to focus more on the production of in-demand products. This marked the end of the Choco Taco, which was conceived and entered production in 1984. According to many takes on Twitter, it was also an essential part of childhood experiences for decades. However, before the news picked up on the story of the Choco Taco's demise, Twitter user @Mountainspass[1] had already created a graphic and started their mourning process on July 23rd, 2022, earning a meager 30 likes for their memorial post (shown below).

Online Reactions

Online, many were upset at the Choco Taco's discontinuation in late July 2022, but the controversy quickly grew into a multi-faceted argument and social media war as different sides and takes were equally validated and shot down in regards to the Choco Taco. On one side, this news upset many who had a nostalgic love for the dessert, even though many admitted that they hadn't actually consumed one recently, as seen in the reaction by Twitter user @Kathleen_Hanley[2] on July 25th, 2022, which received over 70,000 likes in one day (shown below).

After the initial outburst of Choco Taco supporters, there was a growing sentiment that the treat itself wasn't actually that good, with the ingredients list being essentially the same as an ice cream cone in a taco shape. Noted junk-food enthusiast Arin 'Egoraptor' Hanson weighed in by giving his fresh review[3] of a Choco Taco after tasting one following the news, saying that he wouldn't miss it and invigorating the anti-Choco Taco fanbase, giving him over 4,000 likes in one day (shown below).

Despite many people decrying the Choco Taco or claiming that others who haven't had one in a while did not have the ability to give an opinion on the matter, the fervor surrounding the Choco Taco rose to a fever pitch with bizarre, outlandish claims being made by notable people, such as Stephen King tweeting out a slippery slope starting with the Choco Taco's discontinuation, and United States Senator from Connecticut Chris Murphy tweeting[4] his resolve to enact the Defense Production Act to force the manufacturing of Choco Tacos as an emergency provision, earning him 10,000 likes in one day (shown below).
