Overview

Indonesia Simultaneous Regional Election Vandalize Ballots refers to vandalizing ballots by Indonesian who participate in Indonesia Regional Election which held simultaneously as a protest against Indonesian government that considered forcing elections even though COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing.

Background

Indonesia decided to held Regional Election Simultaneously in several regions at December 9th, 2020 According to presidential decree[1] that has been signed by President of Indonesia Joko Widodo on November 27th, 2020.

Due to COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing, many parties and institutions have asked to postpone the election[2], but the government still stipulates that elections will be held on December 9th. It raises suspicion after many events had to be postponed such as 2020 Indonesia Soccer League[3] and 2020 Indonesia Comic Con[4] except the election.

Developments

Election Day

On December 9th, 2020, Indonesia officially held Regional Election Simultaneously in 270 regions[5]. Even though the elections done successfully, many Voting Organizing Groups found lots of ballot has been vandalized. For example on the same day, Twitter[6] user @Dandhy_Laksono uploaded photos of ballot that has been scribbled says "Koruptor Semuanya" (English: "it's all corruptors") and "HAHAHA koruptor lu semua" (English: "HAHAHA you are corruptors"). The tweet received more than 32,300 retweets and 7,500 likes (shown below, left). On the same tweet, many Indonesian Twitter users responding it by uploading the same thing that happened at their region. For example Twitter[7] user @haryadanuu uploaded photo of ballot that has been scribbled "F*ck Government". The tweet received 272 likes and 51 retweets (shown below, right).

It was also spreading to another social media such as Facebook and Instagram. For example on the same day, Instagram[8] user @medanku uploaded photo of ballot with Luffy and Zoro picture from One Piece. The post received more than 2,500 likes (shown below, left). On December 10th, 2020, Facebook[9] user Oo Oo Pall uploaded compilation of ballot photos that has been vandalized. The post received more than 1,600 reactions and 11,000 shares (shown below, right).

Precursor

The same thing was happened on April 17th, 2019 when Indonesia held Presidential Election, many Indonesians put memes or scribbles to their ballots after they are already sick with two presidential candidates. For example Instagram user @makassar_iinfo uploaded photo of ballot with Thanos picture has attached in it. The image has been published by media Hipwee[10] (shown below).
