Overview

The 2020 Hantavirus Scare refers to worries about the outbreak of hantavirus, a rare infectious disease that is only known to spread from rodents to humans, in March and April 2020. The hantavirus began trending on Twitter in late March 2020 due to one case reported in China in a post with little information about what the hantavirus is. Many Twitter users began calling hantavirus the coronavirus in memes spreading misinformation.

In late April and early May 2026, a cruise ship bound for Antarctica experienced an outbreak of hantavirus among several passengers, reigniting fears of the virus as the media reported on it and the internet posted reactions and memes about the incident.
