Background

On October 22, 2014, a shooting occurred in Canada's parliament building,[1] located in Ottawa, Canada. The parliament shooting came soon after three soldiers were shot near a war memorial located near the parliament building. One of the soldiers, Nathan Cirillo,[2] died from his injuries, while the shooter, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, was also killed on the scene. Terrorists ties have been suggested but not confirmed.

Many members of the Canadian parliament[3] sent out tweets on October 22, to inform others of their safety and the fact that parliament was on lockdown as a result of the shooting.

The same day CBCOttawa's[5] Twitter account tweeted out a photo of the deceased shooter, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau.

Within 48 hours of the shooting, the hashtag OttawaShooting[6] was tweeted out over 170,000 times.
