On June 10th, 2021, Instagram^[1] page @stable.taurus posted a stock image of a beat-up-looking, anthropomorphic cartoon heart smoking a cigarette with bloodshot eyes. The text overlay on the post read, "even a girlboss has her weak moments." The post, which is the first known use of this format, received over 100,000 likes in just over a year (seen below).

On March 6th, 2022, Instagram^[2] account @juulsexual posted an image of Keine from Nier with the text overlay, "even a girlboss has her weak moments." The post gathered over 1,000 likes in nearly five months (seen below).

On May 10th, 2022, Instagram^[3] page @javiolentaposting posted another version of the stock image, this time with the cigarette held to his mouth. The text overlay on the post read, "even a girlboss needs a forehead kiss sometimes." The post gathered over 6,000 likes in nearly three months (seen below, left). The image was reposted on Twitter^[4] by @tristehomo on May 16th, receiving over 180,000 likes and over 35,000 retweets in nearly five months (see below, right).

The meme began to grow in popularity in 2022 as internet users edited the phrase to show other things a girlboss might need. On May 17th, 2022, Instagram^[5] page @saphictslurmemes posted a version of the meme that read, "even a girlboss needs a hickey that won't go away sometimes." The post gathered over 1,000 likes in nearly four months (seen below).

On May 18th, 2022, Instagram^[6] page @trans.slut2 posted a slideshow with different versions of the original meme, edited to have text that read, "even a girlboss needs her dick sucked sometimes," and "even a girlboss needs testosterone sometimes." The post gathered over 1,800 likes in nearly four months (seen below).
