EU Flag Edits are photoshopped variations of the European Union (EU) flag made in protest of the EU's Article 13 copyright reform proposals.

Origin

On June 26th, 2018, Redditor KarmaCollider submitted the EU flag to /r/dankmemes in a post titled "Make the EU flag a meme so it's banned in the EU" to /r/dankmemes,[1] where it gathered upwards of 63,300 points (88% upvoted) and 730 comments within the first 24 hours.

Spread

That day, Redditor The3DAnimator submitted a Piper Perri Surrounded variation of the flag to /r/dankmemes,[2] where it gained over 1,500 points (97% upvoted) within 19 hours (shown below).

Also on June 26th, Redditor Allesmoeglichee submitted a photoshopped EU flag featuring a lock silhouette along with the message "This meme is not available in your country" (shown below, left). Over the next day, the post received more than 2,500 points (98% upvoted) on /r/dankmemes. The following day, Redditor Omer066 submitted a It Is Wednesday My Dudes edit of the flag to /r/me_irl (shown below, right).[4]
