About

Eric Cartman's "Whateva Whateva I Do What I Want!", also known as Eric Cartman "Whatever Whatever I Do What I Want!", is a catchphrase from the animated television show South Park said by the character Eric Cartman. The quote stems from an episode parodying the reality talk show Maury, with Cartman delivering the line, "Whatever! Whatever! I do what I want!" A clip from the show was posted to TikTok in 2021, and the sound gained renewed virality on TikTok in 2023, after which it became a sound effect used for lip dubs and short skits.

Origin

On March 20th, 2002, South Park aired the third episode of their sixth season titled, "Freak Strike." The episode contained a scene in which Cartman can be seen dressed up in drag during his and his mother's appearance on the in-show version of the low-brow reality talk show Maury. A clip of the scene was uploaded to YouTube[1] on January 15th, 2021, by South Park's official YouTube channel, where it gathered over 600,000 views in three years (seen below).

Cartman: Whatever! Whatever! I do what I want!
Maury Guest: Oh, whatever, you ain't tough hoe. I run with gangs.
Cartman: Oh yeah? I run with 12 gangs! And we only commit hate crimes! Whatever, I'll do what I want!
Maury Guest: Whatever, you ain't bad you ain't nothing.

On January 12th, 2021, TikToker[2] @saintroo23 then posted a clip from the episode to TikTok, gathering over 4 million plays and 470,000 likes in three years (shown below). The video also serves as the primary "original sound" used by later adopters of the trend on TikTok.

For example, TikToker[4] @liahhbear posted one such video on April 11th, 2023, gathering over 4 million plays and 800,000 likes in two months (seen below, right).

On June 20th, 2023, TikToker[6] @sixshotss posted a video using the sound, gathering over 6 million plays and 1.4 million likes in a week (seen below, left). On June 22nd, TikToker[5] @thekasiahshow2.0 posted a video featuring her and her son using the sound, gathering over 14 million views and 3 million likes in five days (seen below, right).
