About

Energy Sword Sunday refers to a social game similar to memes tied to days of the week It Is Wednesday My Dudes and Tuesday Again? No Problem in which people post jokes relating to the energy sword weapon from the Halo franchise of video games on Sundays.

Origin

On December 10th, 2017, Twitter user @CyberBully20xx[1] posted an image of children's character Gumby holding an Energy Sword from Halo, with the hashtag #EnergySwordSunday. After posting variations over the following weeks, on January 1st, 2018, the user posted that they would be doing new posts with different characters holding energy swords every Sunday in 2018.[2]

Spread

In April of 2018, Tumblr user 10soup, the same user as Twitter user @Cyberbully20xx began posting variations on Tumblr, where they got more popular. For example, a post from April 30th, 2018 featuring Dale Cooper from Twin Peaks gained over 16,000 notes (shown below, left). Another edit featuring Peter Griffin from Family Guy posted by 10soup gained over 6,700 notes (shown below, right).

Other users began posting their own variations in the course of Sundays starting in Spring of 2018. Twitter @funkyobligation user parodied the Family Guy edit with a comic on April 28th (shown below, left). On Tumblr, user yungsquidward posted a variation using a still from the video of "Once in a Lifetime" by Talking Heads, gaining over 8,300 notes (shown below, right).
