Emotional Shower refers to a trend on TikTok where someone will be seen crying or otherwise being emotional while in the shower with the water running, often fully clothed. This is typically used to convey sadness at something that someone said, but can also be used to convey being upset or otherwise emotional at a realization or other thought. The meme itself uses a slowed + reverbed version of the Dido song "Thank You."

Origin

The key part of the TikTok trend, which is shared by all the other variants, is the song. The version of the song "Thank You" by Dido that's used in emotional shower videos was first uploaded to YouTube^[1] on November 7th, 2020, by the channel Brown Rice, which earned 13 million views in 10 months (shown below).

The viral video was first uploaded to TikTok^[2] itself by the creator @JacobxSaint on September 10th, 2021, who gained over 600,000 likes in six days using the video and running shower to make a joke about his small penis (shown below).

Spread

The meme began to evolve over the next few days. A version of it was posted on September 15th, 2021, by TikToker^[3] danny_ray21 in which, instead of being inside the shower fully clothed, they are instead outside on a pickup truck while it is raining on them. Danny is seen clutching a bottle of Nitrox (Nitrous Oxide) in the video, which earned 340,000 likes in one day (shown below).

Another version, this time in a female version of the original dick joke, was uploaded by TikToker^[4] sexiestmferalive on September 15th, 2021, using her body size as the crux of the sadness, earning 225,000 likes in one day (shown below).
