The Emoji Challenge is a social game in which people make the faces or bodily positions of an emoji as another participant attempts to guess which emoji they are imitating.
Origin
The earliest known version of the Emoji Challenge was posted on January 19th, 2014 by YouTuber Timmy Timato. In this video, Timmy Timato and fellow YouTuber Ashley Mardell mimic the appearance of various emojis. The post received more than 10,000 views in five years (shown below).
Spread
Throughout the year, others on YouTube shared videos attempting similar versions of the challenge. For example, on February 18th, YouTuber Kaylie Grace posted an "Emoji Challenge" video, which received more than 63,000 views in five years (shown below, left).
Several months later, on April 8th, YouTuber Wassabi VLOGS posted a version. The post received more than 5 million views in less than five years (shown below, right).
On November 30th, 2015, YouTuber Collen Ballinger, also known by her alter ego Miranda Sings, posted a variation. The post received more than 11 million views in four years (shown below).
Three years later, on July 27th, 2018, Twitter user @Dee_TakeOff tweeted a video of the game in a group chat. The post received more than 19,000 retweets and 43,000 likes in less than one year (shown below).
The following year, on March 27th, 2019, Twitter user @iamjeyonce posted another group chat video. The post received more than 227,000 retweets, 647,000 likes and 8.7 million views (shown below).
Following the post, The Daily Dot [1] posted an article about the challenge.
