Elongated Muskrat is a nickname given to entrepreneur Elon Musk, which is often falsely cited as his full name in troll posts on social media.

Origin

On July 11th, 2014, Twitter user @jdcrowley[1] tweeted a joke explaining that Elon Musk's full name is "Elongated Muskrat", which gained over 45 likes and 10 retweets over the next five years (shown below).

Spread

On December 27th, 2016, Redditor clockwork2112 submitted a post titled "Elon Musk = ELONgated MUSKrat = gated rat = rated gat" to the /r/shittyconspiracy subreddit.[2] On May 5th, 2017, Twitter user @drewtoothpaste[6] tweeted that Musk's "full name is Elongated Musk" (shown below, left). Within two years, the tweet received upwards of 2,700 likes and 730 retweets. On February 6th, 2018, Twitter user @Mr_Kapowski tweeted "Elon Musk's full name is actually Elongated Muskrat," which gained over 44,200 likes and 11,500 retweets within 10 days (shown below, right).

On February 10th, Redditor thelatinking215 submitted a fake Musk tweet featuring a picture of the Rainbow Road level in Mario Kart titled "Elongated muskrat" (shown below) to /r/dankmemes,[4] where it accumulated more than 15,800 points (92% upvoted) and 80 comments within five days.

The following day, Redditor Mysteriex submitted a post titled "Elon Musk vs. Elongated Muskrat" to /r/whowouldwin.[3] On February 16th, The Daily Dot[5] published an article titled "Did you know Elon Musk is short for Elongated Muskrat?"
