The Elevator "Woah" Challenge is a social game in which participants leave their phone on an elevator with a floor set and the phone's camera on. Before the doors on the elevator close, the participant exits and races the elevator via the stairs to the pre-set floor. When the doors of the elevator open, the participant performs the Woah dance.
Origin
The earliest known example of the game was posted by Twitter user @Mike_the_West on April 1st, 2019. In the video, the participant lays their phone on the elevator floor and races the elevator to another floor. When the doors open, the participant performs the dance. Within four days, the post received more than 70,000 retweets, 200,000 likes and 2.4 million views (shown below).
Spread
Following the post, others replied with videos of themselves attempting the challenge. For example, Twitter user @Mateo_SZ_ tweeted a video of an attempt, which recieved more than 145 retweets and 1,700 likes in 24 hours (shown below).
Additionally, Twitter user @OBannon22 attempted the challenge but was interrupted by another passenger. They wrote," Tried this but a delivery guy was waiting at the end wondering why I left a phone in an empty elevator." The post received more than 50 retweets and 575 likes in 24 hours (shown below).
On April 4th, Redditor DarkVioletCloud asked about the challenge in the /r/OutOfTheLoop subreddit.[1]
