About

Elements Fan Edits refers to a series of TikTok fan edits of chemistry elements of the periodic table and other element-related materials. The trend became popularized in December 2022 and parodies edits of celebrities, like Pedro Pascal, who featured as a prominent example of the trend.

Origin

On December 28th, 2022, TikTok[1] user @jetskips uploaded the first known elemental edit video about "matter," which included a clip of the kid's cartoon The Binocs Show[2] saying "everything is matter" and other videos of nature and atoms (shown below). The video garnered 1.7 million plays and over 232,000 likes in three months.

Spread

Hydrogen was the first element of the periodic table to receive a fan edit video, again by TikToker @jetskips. The video (seen below, left), uploaded on December 29th, 2022, garnered 12 million plays and 2.9 million likes. A day later, the same creator uploaded a fan edit (seen below, right) of the element carbon, receiving 12 million plays and 2.7 million likes in three months.

The success of the videos above inspired other creators to post element fan edits on TikTok. The hashtag #elementedit[3] accumulated 86.2 million views on the platform and features videos like an edit of the chemical element bromine, posted by TikTok[4] user @xdaniel_sanxd on January 13th, 2023. The video (seen below, left) garnered 7.9 million plays and 1.3 million likes in two months. Another fan edit, uploaded on January 9th by @genji.ex[5] describes the power of the chemical element plutonium. The video garnered 6.4 million plays and 1 million likes in two months (below, right).
