"Ebin", sometimes spelled "Epin", is an intentional misspelling of the word "epic" which is often associated with the character Spurdo Spärde and ironic meme culture.

Origin

According to Encyclopedia Dramatica,[2] the term "epin" was coined as a shortened form of the phrase epic win in June 2009 on 4chan's /b/ (random) board, where it was spammed repeatedly and accused of being a forced meme. On June 7th, several Urban Dictionary[3] definitions for "epin" were submitted. According to the s4s Wiki,[1] the term "ebin" was subsequently coined as a Spurdo Spärde-style misspelling of epin on the Finnish image board Kuvalauta to avoid bans for posting the word "epic."

Spread

On November 2nd, 2013, a page for "Ebin" was created on the s4s Wiki.[1] On December 15th, a 4chan user submitted a picture of Doge with the question "What does ebin means?" (shown below).

On February 18th, 2014, Redditor C0ltFury asked "What does the 'Ebin' meme mean?" in a post submitted to the /r/NoStupidQuestions[4] subreddit. On April 1st, YouTuber Herr uploaded a Baneposting video titled "Ebin Meem Broseph", garnering over 100,000 views in the next year (shown below). On December 15th, Urban Dictionary[5] user Fuegot submitted an entry for "ebin," defining it as an ironic term used to mock meme culture.
