Dust My Wets is internet slang used to comedically describe the act of grating cheese on pasta, the cheese being the "dust" and the pasta noodles being the "wets" due to their textures. The phrase was first used in a viral 2019 tweet, which has been shared numerous times across social media and inspired a number of memes referencing it, most frequently image macros and photoshops.
Origin
On March 5th, 2019, Twitter[1] user @horsedivorce posted a tweet imagining a scenario at a restaurant where a man asks the server to "dust his wets," referring to grating parmesan cheese on their noodles (shown below). The tweet gained over 64,000 likes and 17,000 retweets in two years.
Spread
The tweet gained significant popularity, with a screenshot being reshared on social media a number of times that year.[2][3]
The post also inspired a number of image macros referencing it over the course of 2019 and 2020. For example, on June 7th, 2020, Facebook[4] page "Musick Puns & Memes" posted an image referencing it (shown below, left). On December 21st, Facebook[5] page "D U M B B I T C H J U I C E" posted another image using the phrase, garnering over 5,600 shares and 3,200 reactions in six months (shown below, right). The image was originally posted by Facebook[6] page "Parchment and Plastic" on May 29th, 2019, garnering over 5,100 shares in a year.
