The Duck Smoking GIF refers to a reaction GIF of a yellow duckling smoking a joint (cigarette, blunt) while shaking its head and laughing. The GIF was commonly used on Twitter / X in 2024, to portray reminiscing about an activity one used to do. The GIF was originally created for Telegram by artist Egor Zhgun in 2019. After its virality, many shared other Telegram Duck GIFs, also known as Utya Duck Telegram Stickers.

Origin

On September 4th, 2019, a sticker GIF was created for Telegram^[1]^[13] by Serbian artist Egor Zhgun^[14] showing a yellow duckling smoking a joint with text reading, "HAHA, CLASSIC" (shown below, left). When posted, it received over 101,800 views in five years. The GIF was part of Egor Zhgun's sticker pack called Utya Duck which was fully released on April 16th, 2020, on the site Behance.^[12]

On May 20th, 2020, Tenor^[2] user Alli_ahalya uploaded the GIF with a black background (shown below, right).

The GIF was used in non-viral posts on X^[3] as early as July 2020. On June 3rd, 2023, X^[4] user @idoxvi used a cropped screenshot of the GIF in a reply that received over 1,300 likes in nine months.

Predominant usage of the GIF in memes started in 2024, seemingly inspired by X^[5] user @brandochii who first tweeted it on February 19th, 2024, and captioned it akin to the I Might Switch To Bussy meme, gaining over 100 likes in a month (shown below).

Going into March 2024, X user @brandochii routinely used the GIF, evident in an X^[6] post shared on March 18th, 2024, which was captioned, "at the end of the day, the day ends," receiving over 820 likes in six days (shown below, left).

On March 20th, X^[7] user @passthapuff used the GIF and captioned it, "future album tomorrow night," gaining over 2,000 likes in four days (shown below, right).

Increasingly viral usage persisted in late March 2024, such as a post shared by X^[8] user @DrSweety808 on March 22nd, 2024, reading, "thinking about sandwich I eated.. Rhat was good," earning over 25,000 likes in two days (shown below, left).

Also on March 22nd, 2024, X^[9] user @laylology tweeted the GIF, captioning it, "I haven't done a cartwheel since I was nine," receiving over 45,000 likes in two days (shown below, right).

Creators then began using the GIF as an exploitable by remixing it and inserting it into other meme templates. For instance, on March 23rd, 2024, X^[10] user @computer_gay tweeted a mirrored version of the GIF and referenced the Two Dumb Bitches Telling Each Other 'Exactlyyyyy' meme, gaining over 169,000 likes in a day (shown below).

Later on March 23rd, 2024, X^[11] user @hugetulip made a GIF that compared the Duck Smoking to the girl from the Blunt Sesh + Exposing The Government video, earning over 54,000 likes in a day (shown below).
