Dua Lipa posted a selfie holding the book Crying in H Mart over half of her face on March 18th, 2024, to her personal Instagram account. The post (seen below) received over 446,000 likes in one week.[1] The post advertised the book as Dua Lipa's April pick for her book club, which is run from her "global editorial service" website, Service95.[5]

After Dua Lipa made the post on March 18th, 2024, remixes of the photo began to crop up on X / Twitter over the following days. An early post inspiring a series of remixes in its quote-tweets was made on March 20th by user @LaDrova78, depicting Dua Lipa holding Das Kapital by Karl Marx (seen below). It earned over 1,800 likes in the course of five days.[2]

A March 21st post by X user @megachauve444 showing Dua Lipa holding a book about body image often assigned to French adolescents received over 6,100 likes in four days (seen below, top).[3] As the meme format continued to spread, particularly on French-language X, the official account of the Paris Metro's rabbit mascot Serge Lapin posted a version of the meme (seen below, bottom) on March 22nd, earning over 800 likes in three days.[4]

The meme saw some posting on Reddit, including a photoshop battle on the /r/photoshopbattles subreddit on March 23rd, 2024, which saw two entries over the course of three days.[6]
