About

Drunk Driving Memes is a niche meme genre that revolves around the act of driving while intoxicated, a federal offense and illegal in almost every country, but from an intentionally humorous and positive angle. The ironic meme genre often outright defends and celebrates the illegal act, while acting in opposition to thousands of PSA memes that are vehemently against drunk driving. Ironic memes about driving while drunk began appearing online around the mid-2010s onward.

Origin

Though drunk driving has been around for almost as long as the invention of cars, memes about it in a positive sense began appearing online as a form of dank, edgy humor around the mid-2010s. An early example was posted on June 7th, 2015, by iFunny user Gung_Honess_2016,[1] who uploaded an image of a device sold on eBay that was made into a meme about helping people to drink while driving (shown below).

Spread

Memes surrounding drunk driving after the initial ones began sometime in the mid-2010s evolved to become more about expressing a lack of care for driving while intoxicated or being intoxicated because it made driving more fun. An example is seen in the Yolo meme made and uploaded to iFunny by the user juanmiranda61_2015[2] on Decmber 8th, 2018, depicting a female driving home from the bar and saying "Yolo" (shown below).

Gang Alcohol

In 2020, memes about drunk driving took another notable turn, switching from memes that were previously about not caring for the responsibility of drunk driving or playfully acknowledging that it happened to drunk driving becoming a point of pride — particularly with drunk drivers being presented as a persecuted class that is oppressed by the government and its people. This can be attributed to the "Gang Alcohol" movement, which is similar to Gang Weed. For example, on July 18th, 2020, an iFunny user uploaded a Gang Alcohol meme[4] depicting Joker with a comic stating that driving drunk is more fun (shown below).

In 2021, memes about drunk driving also started to go viral without Gang Alcohol branding, as seen by the meme from iFunny user FeatureStealer[3] on September 17th, 2021, in which they depict a group of soldiers as brave, but a guy behind a steering wheel driving into oncoming traffic with a beer bottle in his hand as true bravery (shown below).
