About

Draw Wolf Face refers to an exploitable photoshop template of a wolf without a face above the words "Draw Wolf Face," the idea being for artists to draw a face for the wolf in their own art style and post the results. The trend started on Twitter in March 2021 and is similar to 2004's Give Pikachu a Face meme.

Origin

The original stock image of the wolf first appeared online in 2011 (shown below, left) but has since been removed from such websites. It has been photoshopped a number of times since appearing online, with one of the earliest edits made by Tumblr user karkats-face-on-things[2] on August 3rd, 2015, adding the face of the character Karkat Vantas from Homestuck to the wolf, gaining over 730 notes in roughly six years (Shown below, right).

The original creator of the blank "Draw Wolf Face" template is unknown.

On March 28th, 2021, artist and Twitter user @TemporalWalker[6] uploaded two side-by-side images, one of a wolf photoshopped to have a blank face, and another of the wolf with a face in their art style (shown below, left and right). This is the earliest known Twitter post featuring the template.

One of the earliest popular instances of the meme was uploaded by Twitter artist silverfox5213[1] on the same day, in which they draw the wolf in their particularly young animal art style, also providing the blank template (shown below). The post gained over 7,000 likes and 700 retweets in two days.

Spread

Over the course of the day, a number of artists drew and shared their takes on the trend, many collected under the hashtag #drawwolfface.

On that day, Twitter artist ImalouArt[3] drew the Wolf with a Disney-style face, calling it "Elsa wolf," garnering over 2,700 likes and 200 retweets in two days (shown below, left). On March 29th, Twitter artist ZilvenArt[4] drew the wolf with a realistic battle scar on its face, garnering over 2,400 likes and 250 retweets in a day (shown below, right).

A few hours later Kekeflipnote [5] shared an animated take on the trend, garnering over 34,500 likes and 4,100 retweets in a day (shown below).
