About

Drake Killed XXXTentacion Theory refers to a conspiracy theory that rapper Drake (Aubrey Graham) conspired in the murder of late rapper XXXTentacion (Jahseh Onfroy) in 2018. The theory predominantly stems from an Instagram story that XXXTentacion posted a few months before he died that read, "IF ANYONE TRIES TO KILL ME IT WAS @champagnepapi IM SNITCHING RN." Around that time, XXXTentacion and his fans blamed Drake for stealing the late rapper's flow. Others linked to lyrics on Drake's 2018 song "I'm Upset" that read, "triple X / That's the only time I ever shoot below the neck." In early 2023, Drake was subpoenaed in the XXXTentacion murder trial. The subpoena sparked curiosity and furthered the theory. In May 2024, amid Drake and Kendrick Lamar's feud, the theory resurfaced en masse related to the other serious allegations levied against Drake.

Origin

XXXTentacion's Instagram Story

On February 24th, 2018, Redditor[1] figrofel shared a screenshot of XXXTentacion's then-recent Instagram Story to the /r/XXXTENTACION subreddit. The Story read, "IF ANYONE TRIES TO KILL ME IT WAS @champagnepapi IM SNITCHING RN" (shown below).

Lyrics On Drake's "I'm Upset"

On May 16th, 2018, Drake's album Scorpion was released, including the song "I'm Upset."[2] A lyric in the song was, "SMS, triple X / That's the only time I ever shoot below the neck / Why you keep on shootin' if you know that nigga dead?" On June 13th, 2018, Drake posted the song's music video to YouTube,[3] receiving over 116.3 million views in six years. At the video's 2:20-minute mark, Drake says the aforementioned lyrics (shown below).

A few days after the music video's upload, on June 18th, 2018, XXXTentacion was shot and killed outside of Riva Motorsports in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.[4] On that day, X[5] user @TastyCans tweeted two images that were XXXTentacion's Instagram Story and Drake's "triple X" lyrics on "I'm Upset." @TastyCans started the theory, speculating that XXXTentacion knew secret information about Drake, which resulted in his murder. The tweet received roughly 24,000 likes in six years (shown below).

Spread

On the day of XXXTentacion's death, others online tried to debunk the theory, such as X[6] user @ozairboucher on June 18th, 2018 (shown below), who alleged that Drake was talking about sending nudes in his song "I'm Upset," akin to the full lyrics reading, "End up gettin' loose and gettin' pictures from my ex / SMS, triple X / That's the only time I ever shoot below the neck."

Drake XXXTentacion Murder Trial

In December 2022, Drake, among other rappers like Tekashi69, was listed as a potential witness in the XXXTentacion murder trial.[7] The news went viral when RapTV tweeted[8] the headline on December 17th, 2022, receiving over 83,000 likes in two years (shown below).

In February 2023, Drake was ordered to sit for deposition as a part of the XXXTentacion murder trial.[9] On February 14th, the judge granted Drake's notion to avoid deposition in the XXXTentacion murder trial.[10] News of Drake's notion being granted went viral on social media platforms like X[11] in February 2023.

Resurgence Amid Kendrick Lamar Feud

On May 5th, 2024, X[12] user @Edward__Bernays tweeted the screenshot of XXXTentacion's Instagram Story, captioned, "The next Drake diss track needs to mention how he killed XXXtentacion 💀." The tweet was referencing the then-ongoing Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake feud that transpired across multiple diss tracks, such as Lamar's "Not Like Us." Over 10 days, the tweet received roughly 48,000 likes (shown below).

Soon after, on May 10th, Redditor[13] Bulletstorm6377 posted a link to Imgur[14] of a 19-page document detailing alleged evidence supposedly supporting the Drake Killed XXXTentacion theory.
