Double Layers Effect (TikTok) refers to a series of TikTok videos where creators use a "Double Layers" filter to overlay their photos onto pictures of anime girls and emo wolf memes. The trend began in late August 2022 and developed into its anime variant in December 2022.

Origin

In late August 2022, TikTok released a filter that allows the creator to stack two photos on top of each other, and peer at the bottom photo through a telescope lens. The earliest known use of the filter to stack an anime or wolf meme image was posted on September 3rd, 2022 by @chialmaa,^[1] gathering over 600,000 plays and 100,000 likes in three months (seen below, left). Also on September 3rd, 2022, TikToker @izavah^[2] posted a similar video, gathering over 890,000 plays and 150,000 likes in three months (seen below, right).

Spread

On September 4th, 2022, TikToker @alpha.pookie^[3] posted a similar video, gathering over 2.6 million plays and 280,000 likes in three months (seen below, left). On October 11th, TikToker^[4] @deprivedryan posted a version of the format, gathering over 2 million plays and 260,000 likes in two months (seen below, right).

On December 12th, TikToker^[5] @mike_literus690 posted the earliest known version of the trend to use an image of anime girls, gathering over 400,000 plays and 84,000 likes in three days (seen below, left). TikToker^[6] @username272928 posted a similar video on the same day as well, gathering over 140,000 plays and 22,000 likes in three days (seen below, right).
