About

Dormammu, I've Come To Bargain is a memorable line uttered by character Doctor Strange from the late 2016 Marvel blockbuster film Doctor Strange. Online, the phrase took hold as a staple of image macros, parodies and a comment game conveying time loop and repetition, in a manner not dissimilar to the Revolver Ocelot picture or lyric spam memes such as The Best and When I was.

Origin

The line comes from the end of the movie, released on October 13th, 2016 (November 4th for the US release), in a scene in which Doctor Strange (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) is facing Dormammu, one of the movie's villains and a powerful magic creature.

In the climactic scene (extract from it shown below, uploaded to YouTube in March 2017), Doctor Strange is seen preparing himself before facing Dormammu by creating a green magic glyph. He then greets the creature by saying "Dormammu, I've come to bargain" and gets killed after a brief exchange. The scene seems then to rewind back in time to the moment Strange delivered his catchphrase before playing it again and again with different death scenes, trapping his enemy into an endless time loop which eventually allows him to have his bargain, asking for the creature to leave Earth and never attack it again.

Spread

On November 6th, 2016, the Novelty Twitter Account Dormammu I've @ComeToBargain was launched,[1] only featuring a screenshot of the scene with the phrase "Dormammu, I've come to bargain." It then got updated with the same tweets repeated again and again several times a day from November 6th, 2016 to March 5th, 2017, accumulating to over 1,200 tweets.

On November 12th, Reddit user LionKiegrass70 asked "What is "Dormammu I've come to bargain"?"[2] to the r/OutOfTheLoop subreddit. While most of the answers were serious, a handful of users replied with the catchphrase, one after the other.[3] This textual game of recreating what seems to be a time loop similar to the movie also happened in the comment section of a 9gag Boardroom Suggestion parody,[4] posted November 15th, getting the top-rated comment. On November 19th, a looped animated gif image of actor Benedict Cumberbatch was uploaded to imgur with its title and description flooded with the catchphrase only.[5] As of May 2017, it has gained over 1,100 upvotes and 50,000 favorites.
