About

Don't Trust Me is a song by American electronic duo 3OH!3. The song became subject to a parody that usually involves animations of characters refusing to help others climb up from cliffs, which ends on a close-up of the character grinning as the song blares in the background.

Origin

"Don't Trust Me" was initially released in the United States on June 1st, 2008 as the first single to 3OH!3's debut album, Want.[1] The song ended up becoming a huge hit globally, peaking at #7 on the Billboard 200 chart. It is also certified 3x platinum. The song's music video was released in October of that year, currently sitting at over 33 million views.

Spread

On April 29, 2010, animator Milizapiainc submitted an animation to her YouTube channel depicting a human female character dangling from the edge of a cliff, where a male character appears and offers her a hand. Gaining her trust, he grabs her, only to throw her off. The video closes in on his grinning face as he lip synchs to the chorus of "Don't Trust Me." The video has over 3,000 views as of 2017.

Soon after Milizapianic's video, more parodies began to appear, typically involving the same type of joke, though other, original versions revolving around romance have appeared as well. Most of these videos are animated and tend to involve Furry characters. For example, the most popular upload of this kind was uploaded by yeagar on July 24th, 2017 and has over 200,000 views (shown below, left). Another popular edit in this vein was uploaded on August 6th, 2010 by Mint Chip and gained over 65,000 views (shown below, right).
