About

Donald Trump's "YMCA" Dance refers to a viral video of President Donald Trump dancing to "YMCA" by The Village People while at a campaign rally in Florida. The video, taken shortly after he was discharged from Walter Reed Medical Center for his COVID-19 diagnosis, was praised by conservatives for showing how lively Trump seemed, while liberals found it tone-deaf considering the toll the pandemic has taken and suspected Trump's energy may have been due to steroids he was taking as a treatment for the illness. It also led to numerous edits where Trump was dancing to other songs or dancing in a different location.

Origin

On October 12th, 2020, Donald Trump held a campaign rally in Florida. Afterward, he danced to the "YMCA" by the Village People. Video of the dance was taken by @BrianClowdus, gaining over 11,000 retweets and 27,000 likes (shown below).

Spread

Twitter was divided by party lines on the video. Conservatives thought it highlighted how energetic Trump seemed. User @SusanStJames3[1] tweeted, "Did Trump look great tonight or what? His energy is higher than ever 😀" (shown below, left). Liberals found the video distasteful for multiple reasons. User @OxfordDiplomat[2] tweeted, "The impeached President of the United States is quite literally high on a bunch of experimental drugs and is just out dancing to the YMCA while America burns – physically and metaphorically behind him. You couldn’t write this script."

Others made parodies of the video. A novelty account called @Dancing_Trump began posting the clip set to various music (example shown below, top). User @JaseMonkey posted a green-screen template of Trump dancing, gaining over 20 retweets and 30 likes and inspiring further parodies (shown below, bottom). The meme was covered by StayHipp.[3]
