Somebody Had To Do It, I Am The Chosen One is a quote spoken by Donald Trump in August 2019 while answering questions from reporters about trade with China. The video went viral on TikTok in early 2023 as a source for lip-dub skits and memes.

Origin

On August 21st, 2019, the C-Span YouTube^[1] channel uploaded a clip of Donald Trump answering questions from reporters about trade with China. At one point, Trump says, "Somebody had to do it, I am the chosen one," while looking up at the sky. The video gained over 516,000 views in four years (shown below). The quote was reported on in the media by sites including CNN,^[2] who reported that Trump said he was "joking" and "having fun" in regards to the quote.

In early 2023, the clip began to go viral on TikTok as a source for lip dubs and memes. On January 27th, 2023, TikToker^[3] @hartzbets posted the clip, captioned, "POV: My family asks me why I'm the gambling addict and alcoholic of the family," garnering over 2.3 million views in three months (shown below). The video's original sound was used over 1,200 times over the next three months, mostly in lip dub skits about being the "chosen one" in a given situation.

On April 20th, TikToker^[4] @ride.wild.9 posted a meme using the video, garnering over 1.9 million views in five days. On April 22nd, TikToker^[5] @2turnt2talk posted another meme using the clip, garnering over 2.5 million views in three days (shown below).
