Doja Cat's "Freak" is a self-released 2018 song by pop singer Doja Cat that became popular in May 2020 due to TikTok dance and POV videos. The song has been used in over 630,900 videos on TikTok within three months of it being uploaded to the platform and inspired a TikTok dance which was performed by Charli D'Amelio.

Origin

On November 10th, 2018, Doja Cat released her song "Freak" on Soundcloud (shown below). The song received over 4.2 million plays and 152,000 likes in a year.

Spread

On March 12th, 2020, TikToker coenbeauty uploaded a clip of the song highlighting the lyrics "freak like me" (shown below, left). On May 5th, TikToker grace_giff used the song in a a POV video about a new kid in school which received over 2.9 million likes (shown below, right). The sound clip was then used in more POV videos mostly relating to new kids in school.

On May 8th, TikToker sharlizetrue_ created a dance trend in her video that gained over 71,000 likes in a month (shown below, left). On June 15th, Charli D'Amelio uploaded a video of herself doing the dance which acquired over 7.5 million likes in a week (shown below, right).
