Dogpelgänger is a slang term used to describe a human and dog that bear a resemblance (similar to Kitler). The word has also been used to describe two dogs that look alike.

Origin

The earliest known usage of "dogpelgänger" was posted on the blog "DOGpelganger" on January 2nd, 2012. According to the site's description, "This blog is dedicated to my dog Milo and the moments when I look at him and decide he looks like a famous person and make poorly photoshopped side-by-side comparisons of his daily doppelgangers" (examples below).[1]

Later that year, on December 28th, 2012, Urban Dictionary user Blarbigian defined the term as "A dog bearing a striking resemblance to its owner" (shown below).



On January 9th, 2016, the Twitter [3] account @YouAreDogNow launched. The account asks Twitter users to send in pictures to be paired with a dog. Within three years, the account has amassed more than 44,000 followers (examples below). Later that month, Twitter[5] published a Moments page on the account.



The following year, Twitter[4] account @TrekMovie posted an image of actor Sir Patrick Stewart with his "dogpelganger." The post received more than 100 retweets and 260 likes in less than two years (shown below).
