About
Dogmeat is the name of the a recurring non-playable character from the game series Fallout. Known for his loyalty and companionship, Dogmeat has become one of the most popular NPCs in gaming and gained a reputation as one of the most fun parts of the Fallout series.
Origin
Dogmeat originally appeared in the first Fallout game. He was located in Junktown in the year 2161, where he was the companion of another NPC named Phil; the player could distract Phil and therefore gain Dogmeat as his own companion.[1]
Dogmeat continued to appear in all of the Fallout games. In Fallout 3, he was integrated more into the gameplay, and his popularity as a character began to rise even more.[2] He appeared again in Fallout 4, by which time he had his own fandom and cult following.[3] Although the later versions of the game occur much later in time, the game's creators have maintained that the newer Dogmeat is a direct descendent of the older Dogmeat.
Spread
Dogmeat fandom began to develop during the release of Fallout 3, but exploded after the release of Fallout 4. Many players were immediately interested in finding him, causing videos with instructions to skyrocket in views. In addition, users posted images of Easter Eggs or glitches involving the companion. On reddit, 29 different threads regarding Dogmeat have over 1000 upvotes as of November 23rd, and most of them pertain to the version available in Fallout 4.[4] Users have posted over 100 videos of Dogmeat on Vine[5] and 135 images tagged with #Dogmeat on Imgur,[6] where many users post images from the game or images of real life dogs that look like Dogmeat. On Instagram, there are 17,000 posts tagged with #Dogmeat,[7] and Twitter mentions of the word rose from an average 100 to 2,000 per day after the release of the game.[8][9]
Dogmeat was also featured in several reviews of Fallout 4. Leon Hurley of GamesRadar played through a version where he followed Dogmeat home after being set loose.[10] Several games publications, including Games Rant, published stories about how to find armor for Dogmeat.[11]
