Dog With Apple, also known as Apple Dog, Dog Eating Apple or Dog With Apple In Mouth, refers to a photograph of a dog with a red apple in its mouth, wearing a blue sweater and surrounded by other apples on the ground. The image was originally paired with an intentionally misspelled caption reading, This Dock Is Holding an April🍎 in Its Melt which went viral on social media platforms like Twitter / X and TikTok in late 2023 and 2024. The image with the caption became an exploitable template and catchphrase online. In late 2024, the Dog With Apple amassed a series of AI Videos on TikTok using the AI video generator Minimax by Hailuo AI. The Dog With Apple Minimax Hailuo AI Videos sparked new interest in the meme.

Origin

On April 22nd, 2013, an unknown Imgur^[7] user shared a photo of a dog with a caption reading, "Look! I got you an apple!" The dog is seen with an apple in its mouth, wearing a blue sweater and surrounded by other apples, seemingly at an apple orchard. The image received over 7,700 views and 2,700 upvotes in 11 years (shown below). The post is currently the first-known upload.

This Dock Is Holding an April🍎 in Its Melt

On November 15th, 2023, X^[1] user @brokenbyrds tweeted an image of a dachshund with an apple in its mouth, writing, "This Dock Is Holding an April🍎 in Its Melt." The tweet gained over 6,300 retweets and 28,000 likes in seven months (shown below). The misspelled catchphrase became associated with the Apple Dog going into 2024 and largely sparked the meme's popularity.

Precursor

The tweet was likely inspired by a November 21st, 2022, tweet by user X^[2] @Twizzwald, which used a similar construction to write, "This dock is holding a Greg 🥚 on its Held" as the caption to a picture of a dog with an egg on its head. That tweet gained over 4,600 retweets and 12,000 likes in a year and a half (shown below).

Spread

After 2013, the photo of the Apple Dog. For instance, on April 23rd, 2013, Tumblr^[8] user bunnyfood posted the image, amassing over 216,700 notes in 11 years.

In 2023, following the This Dock Is Holding an April🍎 in Its Melt tweet, some exploitable variations surfaced online. For example, on December 23rd, X^[4] user @KIRBYSWARPSTAR posted Kirby fan art in the template, gaining over 30 retweets and 120 likes in six months (shown below).

On January 17th, 2024, X^[3] user @ArcheopsEnjoyer posted a One Piece edit of the meme, gaining over 440 retweets and 2,900 likes in five months (shown below).

The tweet also found success on TikTok in 2024. On April 27th, TikToker^[5] @funnytextohh posted a song featuring funny text message threads, starting with the "This Dock" tweet, gaining over 137,000 likes in two months (shown below).

The song notably inspired myriad videos. For example, on May 21st, 2024, TikToker^[6] @underratedgrapejuice posted an animation for the song featuring Sonic the Hedgehog, gaining over 24,000 likes in one month (shown below).

Minimax by Hailuo AI Videos

On November 30th, 2024, TikToker^[9] @artsdd6 posted a video that used the AI generator Minimax by Hailuo AI, showing a dog with an apple in its mouth being interrupted by a man and then running through a forest. The base image also replaced the apples with the Wapple. Over five days, the video received roughly 2.8 million plays and 393,900 likes (shown below).

In the following week, users added to the trend en masse, such as TikToker^[10] @waaaxe on December 3rd, whose video showed the dog dropping the apple and turning around to see a black void open up and churn leaves. The video received over 7.8 million plays and 1.4 million likes in three days (shown below).
